What is a facelift?
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgical or non-surgical procedure which creates a more youthful appearance in your face. It does so by removing the sagging tissues which give one an old look, and it makes the patients who have undergone it look not just more youthful, but also better and healthier. It removes the deep folds in the skin, the expression folds, as well as any excess skin that a person may face after a severe weight loss. There are three basic types of facelift: the full facelift, mini facelift and necklift. All three procedures yield the same results, depending on one’s age and the degree of facial laxity, although the results may not be as long-lasting with less invasive procedures, such as the mini facelift.

How much does a facelift cost?
The average surgeon fee for a full facelift procedure in the USA in 2019 ranged between $7,700 and $11,780. At the average price of $3,500 to $8,000, a mini facelift costs less, but this does come with a price: the procedure is recommended only for younger people, and in the elderly it may have limited results. A liquid facelift costs as little as $400 – $8,000 but the results are expected to last some 8 months after the procedure. Over time, these costs can add up, so it is important to work them into your calculation. Bear in mind that the costs explained are surgeon fees. Other related expenses, such as the anesthesia, surgery center fees and any additional costs related to the procedure or the hospital stay can increase the total cost by 50%-100%, depending on the facility.
The total cost of a facelift depends on a variety of factors and can be best approximated by a medical professional. The factors that contribute to the price are the country and the general region where the procedure is to be done, the kind and extent of the procedure, any underlying medical conditions that may require the presence of additional medical staff, the recovery period, as well as the experience and the expertise of the surgeon in charge.

When do I need a facelift?
A typical facelift lasts some 7-10 years, after which period a ‘refresher’ is suggested. Some surgeons would advise that the first facelift is carried out in late-forties, with the secondary facelift done in early sixties. Younger people may also opt for a facelift, although less-invasive procedures, such as a mini facelift or a liquid facelift are more generally recommended to them. Exceptionally, full facelift can be recommended to teenagers, especially in cases of extreme weight loss. Facial rejuvenation gives better, longer lasting results in younger patients, who can benefit more even from the less-invasive procedures.

At what age do people get a facelift?
People decide to do a facelift when they feel it is the best time to do so. Young people may decide to do a facelift after a severe weight loss or an injury which damages the tissues that support the skin. People in their 40s may decide to do a facelift because at this age it gives the longest lasting results with very short recovery periods. Facelifts are, however, most strongly associated with people in their 50s and 60s.

How long does a facelift take?
The length of a facelift depends on the kind and the extent of the procedure. A full facelift can take anywhere between two and six hours, a mini facelift generally two to four hours, while a necklift procedure lasts between one and three hours (it should be understood that a necklift does not address facial laxity and is usually performed alongside a full facelift).

Does insurance cover a facelift?
Most cosmetic treatments, including facelifts, are not covered by health insurance. Cosmetic surgery is no small expense and is excluded from most health insurance plans. For more details, please check with your healthcare insurance provider or check the terms and conditions that apply in your case. In some rare cases, health insurance may partially cover expenses of a reconstructive surgery, such as correcting a nasal deviation during a rhinoplasty procedure or a partial facelift after an injury which degrades the quality of life functionality of the face.

What training is important for a a facelift surgeon?
According to the ABCS (American Board Cosmetic Surgery), an ABCS candidate must first complete an ACGME or AOA residency program in a predefined surgical specialties. Afterwards, they should apply for an AACS certified cosmetic surgery fellowship, which lasts for one or two years, depending on the surgical specialty. Once all these criteria are met, the candidates must undergo a scrutinizing examination, both oral and written to receive the ABCS board certification.
According the BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons), the entire journey from medical school to a certified plastic surgeon can be as long as 10 years and it encompasses three levels of accreditation:
- 2 years in the foundation program to gain experience in a variety of specialties and earn a GP certification.
- 2 years in the Core Surgical Training. The trainees are expected to switch between several 4-6 month long jobs in a variety of specialties during the two-year period.
- 6 years in Plastic Surgery training. The trainees are required to complete Intercollegiate Specialty FRCS (plast) examination prior to becoming certified.

Is a facelift safe?
Complications following a facelift procedure are infrequent, as long as the procedures are carried out by certified and experienced professionals. The risks of facelift surgeries include bleeding, bruising, damage to the facial nerves, infections, hematoma, scarring, tissue necrosis, unevenness between the sides of the face, inflammation, shooting pain, loss of hair around the site of the incision (very rare), cardiac and pulmonary complications, numbness, poor wound healing. The surgeon will provide you with more details on complications and how to best avoid them. Remember, the surgeon’s advice is to be followed at all times.

How do I get insurance to pay for a facelift?
With a high price ceiling and the predominantly cosmetic aspect of plastic surgery, most insurance policies do not cover expenses arising from cosmetic surgery. In rare cases when the plastic surgery is reconstructive surgery, the health insurance may cover the expenses either partially or fully, depending on the case. In some rare cases when the cosmetic surgery is also done with a reconstructive part, that part may be covered by the health insurance. These rare cases would include rhinoplasty with a nasal deviation correction or a facelift after severe injuries to the face. Please, contact your health insurance provider for more details and exact information on your particular insurance policy.

Tips to reduce swelling after a facelift?
To reduce the swelling after a facelift procedure, follow the aftercare advice from the clinic. Keep your head in an elevated position, by means of retainers or stacked pillows. Avoid any bending over or lifting and take care of the wound as instructed by the aftercare advice. Any blood-thinning medication should be avoided until the surgeon gives permission to do otherwise. Avoid any food rich in salicylates, such as tomatoes, melos, guava, raisins, olives, mushrooms, apricots, etc.

In general, it can take anywhere between 2 and 4 weeks for a full recovery after a facelift. Full results after a facelift can be seen some 6-12 months after the initial procedure. Should I get a facelift in another country?
Many people travel overseas to do a facelift, although this is not always advised. Uncertain standards and foreign medical practices may not always meet your expectations or guarantee the great results you hope for. If you do decide to do a facelift abroad, make sure to do what is in your power to guarantee good results and safe conditions for the procedure.
https://www.isaps.org/ – offers a searchable database of all the plastic surgeons in the world who meet their criteria. One of the criteria is that both the surgeon and their staff speak fluent English, so that there are no chances of miscommunicating.

How do I sleep after facelift surgery?
After a facelift surgery, you should take plenty of rest. Sleeping can be challenging, but surgeons generally advise sleeping on your back, with the back of your head resting on a recliner or at least two pillows. The head should be slightly elevated: an angle of some 30 degrees seems to be perfectly suited for facelift recovery. This procedure should be followed for a minimum of several weeks after a facelift or until the surgeon has given clearance that it is acceptable to sleep in other positions. In cases when a recliner is not available, a “husband” pillow may be a good alternative.

Is a facelift painful?
A facelift surgery is not painful. An anesthetic is applied locally or the patient is brought into an induced sleep stage. Post-surgery, some swelling and pain are to be expected. Surgeons generally advise against taking OTC (Over The Counter) pain killers, since some of them, such as Ibuprofen may cause bleeding at the site of the incision(s). Mild pain killers can be taken as agreed to by your surgeon. Most facelift patients experience mild numbness at the site of the incision.

What not to do after a facelift?
Facelift is a surgical procedure, so some caution is necessary during the recovery time. The patient should avoid any kind of bending over or lifting, as these may cause an increase in blood pressure to the head and bleeding may occur. Furthermore, bumping your face, neck and head should be avoided as well. Sleeping on a flat surface, with no additional support for the head, neck and shoulders is strictly advised against since it may increase the chances of bleeding and the recovery time. Excessive exposure to the sun should be avoided for up to a month after a facelift procedure. Makeup is not to be applied to the face, for the risk of contaminating the site of the incision with microparticles normally found in makeup. The surgeon’s advice on post-surgery recovery must always be followed.

What is a non surgical facelift?
A non-surgical facelift is a combination of practices used to rejuvenate the skin and give it a more youthful look and feel. These procedures do not require an overnight stay in the hospital and the patients are released the same day. While this kind of facelift procedure is fast, economical and is done without general anesthesia, it also gives more moderate results which do not last as long as with a surgical approach to facelift and they have to be repeated periodically. Nevertheless, the results are significant and noticeable. You may consult your family doctor to decide if this is the right procedure for you.

What is a mini facelift
A mini facelift is a surgical procedure which focuses on the lower half of the face. It gets rid of any sagging skin and the biggest difference between a full facelift and a mini facelift is in the extent of the surgery and the size of the incision. With an average price of $3,500 – $8,000, it is a good solution that gives long-lasting, impressive results. It is mostly recommended to younger individuals.

What is a liquid facelift?
A liquid facelift is a non-surgical procedure designed to plump up the skin. Liquid facelift relies on dermal fillers such as BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® which are applied in predetermined areas for best results. This kind of procedure is advised to younger people who would like to refresh their skin, rather than reconstruct the contours. The effects achieved with liquid facelift are similar to those of surgical facelifts and are visible for some 8 months after the procedure.

What is a deep plane facelift?
A deep facelift is a surgical procedure in which the underlying tissues supporting the skin are addressed. It is an invasive procedure which gives the best of results: the skin is left attached to the underlying muscles, while it is the muscles and tendons holding them in place that are adjusted to remove any deep folds or sagging skin and to give the face a more youthful, vibrant look. It should be noted that the surgery does not alter the texture of the skin, but rather its shape. The surgery is advised mostly for the elderly, since the results are impressive and long lasting. The cost of a deep plane facelift falls in the $20,000 to $30,000 bracket.

What is a vampire facelift?
The Vampire Facelift®, vampire facial or a platelet-rich plasma facelift is a three-step non-surgical facelift procedure. It relies on filler injections, blood plasma injections and PRP injections to provide a facelift effect. Due to its ease of administering, relatively low cost and quick recovery times, it is gaining in popularity. Vampire facelift relies heavily on the healing properties of blood plasma to bring about a more youthful, vibrant look. The price for this kind of a procedure is between $1,000 – $2,500.

How long after a facelift can I work out?
As a rule of thumb, all physical activity is to be avoided during the initial 72 hours after the surgery took place. After this period, a mild, slow walk around the bedroom or the living room can be undertaken, but with caution. If any signs of pain, swelling, fatigue or tiredness appear, take a break and resume the activity once you are fully rested. A week after the facelift surgery, you will feel that you may go back to some of your daily routine. Cooking, a slow walk on the driveway or in the backyard are encouraged since they promote circulation and may help speed up the recovery process. After the stitches are removed, you will have more freedom to move and exercise. Enjoy a 20 minute walk around your neighborhood, but make sure that you are wearing a hat to protect the wound and your face from UV radiation. Six weeks after the surgery, you may start going back to your normal exercise routine. Keep in mind that weightlifting and cardio should be slowly reintroduced to your workout regime. Needless to say, every case is different. Make sure to consult your doctor before undertaking any changes to what has been advised to you.
